A Guide to Transfer File Setup for DTF Prints

A blurry logo, a hidden background, or artwork sized for a phone screen can turn a rush order into a preventable delay. This guide to transfer file setup shows you how to prepare artwork that is ready to print - whether you are ordering one shirt design, filling a gang sheet, or producing stickers for a client’s tumbler line.

The goal is simple: send a file that prints the way you expect. Clean edges, accurate color, readable details, and the right dimensions give your transfer the best chance of looking great on the finished product. You do not need expensive design software or an in-house print department. You do need to start with artwork built for production.

Start With the Right Transfer Type

Your file setup begins with the surface you are decorating. DTF transfers are made for fabric, including cotton, polyester blends, canvas, and many other apparel-friendly materials. UV DTF Permastickers are made for smooth, hard surfaces such as glass, acrylic, metal, plastic, tumblers, bottles, and packaging.

That difference affects the artwork. A shirt design may include fine halftones, soft color transitions, and full-color illustrations. A UV DTF design may need bolder text and stronger shapes, especially if it will wrap around a curved bottle or sit on a textured object.

For both products, use the finished decoration size as your starting point. Do not upload a tiny design and expect it to enlarge perfectly. A 3-inch-wide image can look acceptable on a screen but become soft and pixelated when printed at 11 inches wide.

Guide to Transfer File Setup: Size First

Set your artwork to the exact size you want it printed. Width and height matter more than the dimensions of the shirt, tumbler, or blank itself.

For apparel, a left-chest print is commonly much smaller than a full-front print. Youth garments need different sizing than adult garments. If you sell several sizes, choose a transfer size that works across the range, or create separate files for each placement. This avoids a design that looks balanced on a large hoodie but oversized on a small tee.

For UV DTF, measure the flat or usable area of the item. A decal for a tumbler should not run into a tight curve, handle, seam, or tapered section unless you have planned for it. Leave a little breathing room around the edges. It makes application easier and gives the finished piece a cleaner look.

If you are unsure, print your design on regular paper at full size first. Place it on the garment or hard good and check the scale before ordering. That quick test saves material, time, and a difficult client conversation later.

Use 300 DPI at Final Print Size

For raster artwork such as PNG, JPG, or flattened PSD files, aim for 300 DPI at the final size. DPI stands for dots per inch, but the practical point is resolution: your image needs enough pixel data to print sharply.

For example, an 11-inch-wide print at 300 DPI should be about 3,300 pixels wide. If the same file is only 1,100 pixels wide, it may look fine at around 3.5 inches but not at full-front size.

Avoid screenshots, images pulled from social media, and compressed files saved repeatedly from messaging apps. Those files often carry artifacts, soft edges, and uneven color that become obvious after printing. Start with the original art whenever possible.

Vector files are especially useful for logos, text-based designs, and simple graphics because they can scale without losing sharpness. If your artwork is vector, keep it vector until export whenever you can.

Use a Transparent Background When You Need One

Most apparel artwork should have a transparent background. That means the transfer includes only the design, not a solid white, black, or colored rectangle behind it.

PNG is a dependable choice for transparent-background art. It supports full color and preserves transparent areas, making it a strong option for DTF graphics, logos, and illustrations. A high-resolution PDF can also work well when it contains properly prepared vector artwork.

Do not confuse a white artboard in your design program with a white background in the exported file. If you export as a JPG, the background is usually flattened into the image. That may be exactly what you want for a full rectangular photo print, but it is not ideal for a floating logo or a design with an irregular outline.

For UV DTF Permastickers, transparency is also useful when you want only the graphic to apply to the item. The print process handles the white layer needed behind your design. You do not need to add a white box behind every colored object unless that box is part of the intended look.

Keep Colors Vivid, but Set Expectations

Design on a bright monitor long enough and almost any color can look electric. Print is different. Fabric color, garment texture, finish, and the original art all influence the final result.

Use high-quality RGB artwork unless your ordering workflow specifically requests another color mode. RGB files are common for digital print production and preserve a wide range of color information. Avoid converting files back and forth between RGB and CMYK without a reason, since repeated conversions can shift tones.

Be especially careful with extremely bright neon shades, subtle gradients, and very dark details layered over black. DTF delivers strong color and a solid white underbase, but no print method can make a dark-on-dark design suddenly high contrast. If readability matters, build contrast into the artwork.

For branded work, use approved logo files and established brand colors whenever possible. If exact color matching is critical for a corporate order, test before committing to a large run. Production reality matters: screen settings are not a final color proof.

Make Small Details Big Enough to Survive Production

Fine detail can look impressive at 200% zoom and disappear at actual print size. Tiny text, hairline strokes, narrow gaps, and isolated dots are common trouble spots.

Zoom out and inspect the design at its real dimensions. Can you read the text? Are the lines still visible? Are small openings in letters, such as the center of an “e” or “a,” large enough to stay clear? If not, increase the type size, thicken the strokes, or simplify the detail.

This is even more important for UV DTF decals. Small detached pieces can be harder to apply cleanly, especially on curved items. A slight adjustment to spacing or line thickness often makes the difference between a decal that applies quickly and one that becomes a frustrating production bottleneck.

Avoid adding outlines just to compensate for weak artwork. An outline can improve contrast, but it should look intentional. If it makes the logo feel crowded or changes the brand style, revise the color relationship instead.

Build Gang Sheets With Production in Mind

Gang sheets are one of the easiest ways to make more from every inch of transfer space. They work well for shirt labels, sleeve prints, multiple customer logos, seasonal designs, and repeat orders.

Arrange designs at their final print sizes. Leave clear space between individual graphics so they are easy to cut apart. Keep the layout organized by order, customer, or garment placement when possible. That makes pressing and sorting faster after the transfers arrive.

Before submitting, check for duplicate graphics, missing sizes, and designs placed too close to the edge. A gang sheet is a production tool, not just a collage of art. The more organized it is, the less time your team spends figuring out what goes where.

Do not mirror your artwork unless the ordering instructions specifically tell you to. Production software typically handles the print orientation needed for transfers. Uploading a pre-mirrored design when it is not requested can leave you with backward text and unusable prints.

  • The artwork is sized for the finished print, not enlarged after upload.
